Functional Technologies Corp.'s primary focus is to develop and commercialize advanced urea-degrading yeast products to reduce a known naturally occurring carcinogen Ethyl Carbamate. These yeasts are designed to drastically reduce urea, one of the primary precursors of Ethyl Carbamate. Ethyl Carbamate, also known as urethane, is found in many commonly-consumed yeast-fermented foods and beverages, such as wine, brandy, whiskey, sake, bread, soy sauce, sherry and beer and is a direct byproduct of the use of yeast to ferment foods and beverages.

A significant accomplishment for the company has been the signing of a collaborative research agreement with the University of British Columbia (UBC). This enables the company to benefit from having a working association with UBC's Wine Research Centre, one of the world's most advanced research labs comprising three fully equipped molecular biology laboratories, a mass spectrometry laboratory housing five state-of-the-art mass spectrometers, and a microarray laboratory. All of this allows the company unlimited access to a top genomic research team and one of the most up-to-date research facilities in North America, without expensive capital outlays.

Functional Technologies has acquired the exclusive worldwide rights to produce, market and distribute, or sublicense this yeast technology.
